CHOOOSE delivers the platform that enables Air New Zealand customers to estimate their flight emissions. CHOOOSE enables both individuals and organisations to understand their carbon footprint, make carbon-informed decisions, and support trusted climate solutions around the world.

When you sign up to create your own customer platform, Air New Zealand will share some of the personal information you provide during registration with our partner, CHOOOSE, to enable access and functionality. CHOOOSE's privacy policy will apply to your use of the platform.

Further, to facilitate the calculation of your company's carbon footprint, Air New Zealand will share your company's flight information with CHOOOSE. This includes information such as origin, destination, aircraft type, and number of passengers or weight of flown cargo. Information directly identifying passengers is not shared with CHOOOSE.

Air New Zealand doesn't make any margin on the carbon credits purchased under the platform, nor does Air New Zealand make any money on the operation of the platform.

CHOOOSE charges a small fee to cover administrative costs associated with sourcing, supplying and retiring carbon credits. For more information, see CHOOOSE's terms and conditions.

Your organisation must be on the Corporate Partnership Programme, All-of-Government Partnership Programme, or have an Air New Zealand Travelcard account to be eligible to access the platform.

Only your organisation's primary contact with Air New Zealand has the correct permission to register the organisation to the Emissions Platform. During the registration process, they have the option to either register themselves or nominate a colleague.

The reports are prepared by CHOOOSE for the purpose of providing you with a snapshot of your emissions. No representation or warranty is made regarding the accuracy, completeness or reliability of this report, and we recommend you do not rely on the information included to fulfil any of your legal or reporting obligations.

Emissions from passenger travel on Air New Zealand services are calculated under the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Recommended Practice RP 1726 methodology. This considers:

• The distance travelled on the journey (greater circle distance)
• The class of travel flown (Economy, Premium Economy or Business Premier™)
• A bespoke Air New Zealand specific emissions factor
• A factor for radiative forcing

The emissions for each flight are calculated on a per-seat basis for passengers. Seats in Premium Economy and Business Premier take up more space in the aircraft and accordingly represent a greater share of the emissions generated on the flight.

An emissions factor is a number that represents the quantity of emissions associated with the production of one unit of a particular activity. Emissions factors are used to convert activity data into the quantity of emissions associated with the activity.

CHOOOSE has used the IATA Recommended Practice RP 1726 methodology to calculate bespoke emissions factors for Air New Zealand passenger services. These specific factors typically take into account the particular aircraft type, the route being flown and historical fuel data collected from the route over a period of time.

These Air New Zealand-specific emissions factors are used in the CHOOOSE emissions calculator to more accurately estimate the emissions generated by a particular journey on an Air New Zealand passenger service, instead of relying on industry average emission factors provided by New Zealand's Ministry for the Environment. Emissions generated on codeshare flights, which are not operated by Air New Zealand but transacted via Air New Zealand, are calculated with reference to Ministry for the Environment factors.

Customers using this data for reporting purposes will need to undertake their own assurance engagement. The methodology applied on the Corporate Emissions Platform has been assured to a level of limited assurance. This covers the methodology used by CHOOOSE in the platform to calculate emissions in accordance with ISO 14064‐1, the Greenhouse Gas Protocol and the International Air Transport Association RP 1726 ‐ Passenger CO2 Calculation Methodology. The Air New Zealand data used in the methodology remains subject to external review.

Cargo emissions estimates remain subject to external assurance. 

For air travel emission factors, a multiplier may be applied to account for the radiative forcing of emissions arising from air travel at altitude. Radiative forcing helps organisations account for the wider climate effects of aviation, including water vapour, contrails and indirect greenhouse gas emissions – these are often referred to as non-CO2 impacts.

The platform has a default inclusion of a radiative forcing factor of 1.9 in its calculation of emissions. Customers using the platform can opt-out of including the radiative forcing factor in their emissions estimates.

While radiative forcing and non-CO2 impacts remain the source of ongoing research, Air New Zealand acknowledges the role of aviation in creating non-CO2 impacts.

For the platform, Air New Zealand and CHOOOSE have followed the approach recommended by the New Zealand Ministry for the Environment Manatū Mō Te Taiao in its Measuring Emissions Guidance (July 2023), applying a factor of 1.9 to the carbon dioxide component of the CHOOOSE emissions calculation.

A carbon credit is a unit of measurement that represents one tonne of carbon equivalent (CO2e) avoided or reduced. Carbon credits are issued to verified projects that avoid or reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere.

The sale of carbon credits provides financing to projects that reduce or avoid emissions. When a carbon credit is retired, or cancelled, it has been permanently used. This means that it can no longer be sold or traded, and it can't be used again by another buyer.

Certified projects can issue carbon credits based on the amount of carbon they either prevent from entering the atmosphere or remove from the atmosphere or the carbon life circle.

The issued credits are listed on approved registries, after accredited third parties have verified the activities and the resulting carbon impact. An organisation can then buy those carbon credits. Each carbon credit has a unique serial number to ensure it can't be counted twice.

The Ministry for the Environment notes it its interim guidance for voluntary climate change mitigation the internationally agreed principles that carbon credits must meet to be considered credible for voluntary contributions:

• Transparent
• Real, measurable and verified
• Additional
• Not double-counted
• Address leakage
• Permanent

Air New Zealand has partnered with CHOOOSE to source carbon credits that adhere to these criteria.

Carbon dioxide is the greenhouse gas generated mainly by fossil fuel use, however there are other greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming.

Usually, all greenhouse gases are expressed as carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2e) which is a metric measure used to compare the emissions from various greenhouse gases on the basis of their 'global-warming potential' by converting amounts of other gases to the equivalent amount of carbon dioxide with the same global warming potential. This is why carbon credits are typically transacted in 'carbon', or CO2e.

The carbon credits are held in carbon credit registry accounts. After you buy these,  CHOOOSE will 'retire' them in their corresponding voluntary market registry. Retirements occur twice per year. This will permanently remove them from circulation. The associated retirement certificates will be available within the platform upon retirement.

The platform currently only offers carbon credits for purchase.

At the moment, Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is unavailable for customers to purchase. Air New Zealand continues to work on a SAF programme; please let your account manager know if this would be of interest in the future.
